Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

We went to Uluwatu this morning on the dropping tide, planning to surf the race track, but there was a local competition being held. The peak and racetrack (as always during a competition) was out of bounds, but free surfing was allowed at temples. Temples is a fast powerful wave, and usually not very crowded as a little harder to get to than the other sections. Today there were more surfers than usual due to the competition, but much better than nothing. The local surfers were ripping in the competition, and we have included some photos of the comp.

Advanced surf guiding at Bingin

When we arrived at bingin the tide was still quite high, and quite busy with around 15 people in the water. Very good conditions for intermediate surfers – head high playful waves. As the tide dropped, the waves started barrelling and the intermediate surfers vacated the line up. Perfect size for bingin and only around 8-10 people when the waves were at their best. Very good friendly vibe in the water, and everyone happy to take their turn and share the waves.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

Perfect clean conditions this morning, but the tide was a bit low, and unfortunately the wind picked up at around the time the tide got good. The wind was cross offshore and there was a bit of a bump on the wave, but still very good conditions and some long overhead rides to be had. When the tide was perfect, it was a little bit more crowded that it has been recently, as hardly anyone surfed in morning due to the tide being too low. Swell is forecast to be a bit bigger tomorrow with better tides.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

We went to Dreamland at dawn this morning hoping to surf the A frame, but the swell had dropped significantly and was not big enough. Impossibles was breaking consistently but only head high and sectioning. A few head high waves coming through at Bingin but a few guys out and not worth it. We decided to wait for the incoming tide and get some real waves at Uluwatu, which is never ever flat. Quite a lot of water moving, which is typical for the day after a big swell but clean offshore wind and not many out. A few barrels to be had on the peak, and the odd 300 metre ride on the racetrack.

Advanced surf guiding at Bingin

We went to bingin this morning and was very surprised to see good waves, but no one in the water. Quite a few out at Impossibles which looked good, but empty line up at bingin was unmissable. The sets were double overhead and about the maximum size bingin could hold. It was a bit tricky, as a lot of water moving down from impossibles made a strong current, but just 2 of us in the water for the first hour was a fair deal. Later in the morning a few more paddled out to enjoy some quality waves. Sunny and quite strong offshore wind, which is typical for August.

Advanced surf guiding at Impossible

Huge swell today and quite stormy conditions, which is unusual for this time of year. August is normally endless sunshine but there were some heavy showers. The photos look like Padang Padang, but actually were shot at last section of impossibles, which was firing some square barrels today. Only 5 guys brave enough to take on impossibles today. We took a look at Uluwatu and just 1 guy out as massive and a bit lumpy.
