Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Unusually small surf for September, perfect for novice surfers. Even on the smallest days, there are always shoulder-head high waves at Uluwatu. Today was perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers, as small easy waves and uncrowded. When the swell is this size the locals and good surfers, tend to take the day off, and that just left a small crew of improvers. One key aspect to improve your suring, is ride time and there is plenty of that at Bali’s premier surf spot, as the ride is very long.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Swell size is a bit smaller today and quite a strong offshore. The weekend crowds have gone, and it was very much a pandemic crowd out there today. Tides are smaller so slower moving and was the right tide for the whole session. Waves were a bit slow coming, but worth the wait as there were a few very long rides on the racetrack. Racetrack is a great name as it describes the wave very well.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Waves were tiny early this morning, but as the tide came in, the new swell arrived. Waves were head high late morning, with the occasional overhead set, and seemed to be picking up. This is a long range 17 second period swell so the waves were a bit slow coming, but quite powerful. There were some new faces in the line up, new arrivals since the government started issuing visas again.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Swell size is a little bigger today. Clean head high with overhead sets, perfect for intermediate surfers to practice turns. Full moon means big tides, and surf today was best before and after high tide. Tomorrow looks unusually small, but the weekend looks very promising with a long range 16 second period swell to look forward to.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

We were out at dawn this morning, to catch the perfect tide before it rushed in to a high of 2.2 metres. As expected, the swell had dropped overnight and Impossibles and Bingin were very clean but a bit small. Uluwatu was overhead, and a perfect size for most surfers, but there was morning sickness and was less than perfect. Only 1 guy out on the peak early and he was getting plenty of waves but the rides were rather short. The racetrack was the best section this morning and if you were patient there were a few 200-300 metre rides to be had. Swell is forecast to drop in size again tomorrow and be in the head high range for about a week.

Advanced surf guiding at Bingin

Perfect uncrowded Bingin 3 days in a row is hard to believe. Today was the best with very consistent overhead sets, perfect wind and tide, delivering lots of fun barrels. All the signs are that Bali will soon open to general tourism. Best to come here soon if you want to enjoy uncrowded surfs and quiet roads.

Advanced surf guiding at Bingin

Swell size was again smaller than expected from forecast, but perfect size for Bingin. At beginning of the session the waves were slow coming and a very strong offshore wind. As the tide dropped the waves came more frequently and the wind dropped off. Bingin can handle the strongest wind as it is tucked under the high Bukit cliffs. A cross offshore wind works good here as it holds up the barrel, but does not affect the wave quality as close to the shore. Another perfect day of surfing in Bali.

Advanced surf guiding at Bingin

The swell was a bit smaller than expected today, and hard choice to pick the right spot. We decided on Bingin which is a perfect machine wave as was relatively uncrowded. Set waves were perfect size for Bingin (overhead) and the smaller shoulder-head high waves were still fun and throwing little barrels. Surf is expected to bump up in size tomorrow, and all breaks from Uluwatu to Balanagan will be firing all weekend.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Head high, perfect waves at Bali’s premier surf spot this morning. We were the first ones out this morning and it was worth the early start to get a few rides before anyone else paddled out. As the morning progressed, there were more people coming, but we were already heading back for breakfast by 8am. Surf is forecast to pick up this afternoon and will be pumping until Monday.
