Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Today we cruised down to cruisy Balangan. Perfect picture postcard, long white sand beach, with waves to match. It’s a very long reef with a few sections to spread out the crowds. On bigger days it’s possible to get a ride all the way from the point to way past the warungs. Today was a day for Intermediates and longboarders with cruisy waves. Balangan does not have a strong current and is always smaller that Uluwatu, but never ever flat.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Balangan is one of the most beautiful beaches in Bali. But not only the beach, but also the waves attract many people from all over the world. The water is crystal clear and the waves can be some of the longest you have ever ridden in your life. A goofy footer’s dream!

The paddle out can be a little tricky but with professional guidance, you can be sure to make it out safe. On the wave, the challenge is to generate speed to make it to the open face of the wave. Once there you can enjoy the ride and if you’re lucky, the wave will keep going much longer than expected. Balangan is great to hang around for the day. Surf, relax with an ice-cold coconut on the beach, and surf again.

Intermediate surf guiding at Padang Padang

Getting the fundamental surf techniques right is crucial if you want to surf as best as possible. Often, the basics, like bottom and top turn are overlooked and not taken seriously enough. Getting barreled and doing airs is a goal many surfers have, but first, you should be focusing on the basics.

A good quality bottom turn will set you up for the whole wave and therefore it is important to get it right. Even though this wave might look too “easy” or not “thrilling” enough to some surfers, it is perfect to practice exactly that. Baby Padang gives plenty of opportunities to do bottom, top turns and cutbacks. Master the basics and your surfing skills will be on another level more quickly than you think.

Intermediate surf guiding at Impossible

A new swell arrived this morning and gave us plenty of opportunities to catch waves today. Impossibles is one of the longest left-handers in Bali when everything comes together. The right tide, swell, and wind direction is necessary for the many sections to connect and for the wave to peel perfectly over the reef.

On a smaller swell, it can be tricky to make it around the next section, but it is a great training ground to practice generating speed. This is a crucial skill and it is important to master if you want to get your surfing level to the next level. It will help you not only to get around breaking sections but also to surf the waves longer and therefore have more fun.

Intermediate surf guiding at Greenbowl

What a great morning surf this was to start off the holiday! Shoulder-high left- and right-handers were breaking at an uncrowded spot in the south of the Bukit. Green Bowl is the place to go when the waves are small. The left works perfectly on a lower tide, while you can surf the right when the tide comes up.

The scenery is amazing and seeing Manta Rays jumping out of the water is not unusual. White sand and clear blue water make this place one of our favorite surf breaks. After the first session, you can have an ice-cold coconut on the beach and explore one of the caves down there. The way back up is a bit challenging after a long session, but totally worth it, and a good exercise!

Advanced surf guiding at Nyang Nyang

The rainy season is coming to an end slowly and we have already gotten a glimpse of what is about to come in the following weeks. Light offshore winds in the south of the Bukit were perfect for the mid-sized swell today. The right-hander was firing, shoulder-high to overhead sets were the norm, and every wave was shaped perfectly.

The crystal clear, blue water made this morning even better. This is what a typical day in Bali looks like. Perfect waves and sunny weather, followed by an ice-cold coconut and a delicious breakfast on the beach after the first surf session. Keep hanging out on the beach or exploring the beautiful area, there are many ways to spend the rest of the day before going for a sunset surf.
