Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Uluwatu is on many surfers’ bucket lists. For good reasons, it is one of the best and most famous waves in the world! Surfing here is an unforgettable experience. The scenery and nature around this surf spot are breathtaking. The long, clean left-breaking waves are great for many surf levels.

Not always it is just for expert surfers, when the waves are small and the conditions are right, also intermediate surfers can get a taste of what it’s like to surf this wave. Yes, it gets crowded on days like today, but with the guidance of our local surf instructors, you can be sure to catch many good waves. It is addictive, fun, and challenging at the same time. Be aware though, that it is not uncommon that some sets are bigger than it looks from above.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

Great waves this morning at Padang-Padang, our home spot! Shoulder-high and super fun to ride, the left and right breaking peaks made everyone happy. Offshore wind conditions shaped the waves perfect for those who woke up early.

The swell forecast predicts medium-sized waves throughout the week. These are great conditions for our beginner and intermediate surfers. Three to five feet is big enough to surf most of the spots in the Bukit and to explore some of those which are normally too challenging, like Uluwatu or Bingin. The best waves are not always the biggest, but the ones with the best shape. Keep this in mind and you will find plenty of rippable waves for all surf levels.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Balangan is definitely one of our favorite surf spots in Bali. The crystal clear water and white sand beach are magical. A high tide produces long, enjoyable rides and a safe playground for beginner and intermediate surfers.

Not only are the waves great but also the scenery and small warungs on the beach. After a fun surf session, you can enjoy an ice-cold coconut and watch other surfers getting the ride of their lives. Especially if you are a goofy footer, you will enjoy this wave, but also as a regular footer, you can get some of the longest rides you ever had.

Intermediate surf guiding at Padang Padang

The swell has faded away a little and we are able to surf at our home spot Padang-Padang again. This is a favorite wave among beginner and intermediate surfers. The perfect shape of the wave and the wide channel next to it makes it easy to catch waves and practice the basics.

The waves are going to be smaller again in the next few days. It’s a good opportunity to explore some of the other great surf spots Bali has to offer. Trying different waves will improve your wave reading skills and also help you to adapt to various surf conditions more easily. One of the things that make surfing unique is the fact that you can surf different waves every day, and sometimes, going to find new waves turns into an adventure you will never forget.

Intermediate surf guiding at Jimbaran

Due to the big swell today, we decided to go to Jimbaran where the waves are perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers. Gently breaking green waves give you plenty of time to adjust your foot position on the board and remember the correct body position before you turn the board.

This helps you to memorize the technique and therefore improve faster. Getting the basics right in the beginning is so important. Once you master the pop-up and have a stable position on the board, the next step is to start doing turns and going along the face of the wave. On days like this, where everywhere else the waves are too big, Jimbaran offers the perfect training ground. Plus, the waves are fun too!

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

This morning we took the early boat to Toro Toro, hoping to get in a session before the new swell arrived. It was a building swell this morning, and although not much bigger than yesterday, it was much more powerful. The first day of a new swell is usually the most powerful as the higher period faster waves arrive first. We decided to go take a look at what was going down at Uluwatu. A few hell men on big boards riding big boards. 2019 world champion Italo Ferriera was out there on a shortboard, ripping it up. A bit of wind on it made for challenging conditions, but good to watch with a cold Bintang.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

The beginner and intermediate group took the fun boat to Toro Toro and were rewarded with perfect conditions and perfect waves. The advanced group wanted a bit more power, and they found what they were looking for at Uluwatu. A 16 second swell period means the waves were breaking hard and throwing some barrels. A lot of west in the swell meant that some of the waves were running a bit fast, but if you got the right one then it was a very long paddle back. The current at Uluwatu brings you back to the line up, so a slow paddle back after a very long ride can be the most economical way back to the line up.
