Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

There are some incredible waves in Uluwatu this January! We are enjoying a return of offshore wind and all-day clean conditions with plenty of swell to play with. Our advanced group surfed Uluwatu this morning from first light. The tide was just high enough to be surfed relatively safely. The surfers were guided into excellent waves, with some achieving very long rides. The offshore wind, a powerful swell, and a decent tide are what make world-class surfing conditions here in Bali.

Part of the magic of Uluwatu is that the wave can be surfed by a wide range of surfers, as the smaller waves are still very good. Surfers still building experience, with the help of knowledgeable surf instructors, can safely surf the smaller waves, while avoiding the bigger sets.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Lots of rain this morning, much to the relief of the island of Bali. With the rain came the wind from the west, which chopped up the surf conditions at first light. Once the weather cleared, the wind turned offshore, leaving us with some decent surf conditions and a light crowd. The surfers enjoyed mostly head-high surf with a few larger sets. The waves were clean and lined up nicely for long, fast rides. Great surf, considering how the morning started.

When the rain and the wind come this time of the year, most of the surfers head to the Nusa Dua area, where the wind blows offshore. On days like today, when the conditions clean up mid-morning, you can get some excellent surf in uncrowded conditions.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Excellent surfing at Uluwatu this morning! Our surfers enjoyed high-quality, overhead surf at Bali’s premier surf break. The conditions were clean with a light offshore wind and a mid/low tide. The racetrack section delivered barrels and turn sections for the surfers who can spot the good waves that become long rides, from the faster waves that race off. Top local surfer and instructor, Scotty, expertly directed the surfers onto the best waves.

Uluwatu really is one of the best waves in the world. Additionally, it offers world-class surfing for 9 + months out of the year. It works on any size, any tide, and holds an unfavourable wind well. Not least of all, it is an incredible place to spend a week or two on holiday.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Our intermediate and advanced surfers enjoyed an incredible surf at Uluwatu this morning! The swell is fading in size and consistency however there were still plenty of overhead set waves coming in at the exposed end of Ulwuatu. The conditions were beautiful and clean, with an incredible view at the base of the cliffs. The lineup was peaceful, with turtles swimming about looking for breakfast. The famous wave served overhead-high surf with some larger sets for the more experienced of the crew. The rides were long and the conditions were very clean. Some surfers reported the longest lefts they have ever had.

We are enjoying an incredible end to the year here in Uluwatu. The mornings have been very clean, and the southwest wind has been light. See you out there!

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

More fun, quiet season surf in Uluwatu! The swell is up, the sun is shining, and the waves are good! Despite the light southwest wind, the surfers had a great time and enjoyed the end-of-year sunshine. The waves were in the overhead range, with a few larger sets that Uluwatu always delivers. Despite the unfavourable wind, the Race Track section of Uluwatu served up long and fun rides, with waves of various sizes for different levels of surfers. The more experienced surfers can take off on the bigger and faster waves, while the less experienced can wait for waves farther down the reef or more inside.

We have more fun surfing to close out the year. Plenty of swell, a wind that is not too strong, and excellent weather.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Our intermediate and advanced surfers were off to Uluwatu this morning. The swell has dropped in size and consistency yesterday as we await the arrival of the next swell. There was a light wind from the southwest which added texture to the lineup. Wave heights were in the head-high range, and the faces of the waves were still clean despite the unfavourable wind. Top local surfer and group leader, Scotty, got the wave of the day with a long ride connecting several sections. The crew all had a few fun left-handers and enjoyed the opportunity to surf Uluwatu with friendly conditions.

We are still enjoying very fun surf in the Uluwatu area during this quiet season. Soon, we will be surfing in Nusa Dua, just a short drive away.

Intermediate surf guiding at Dreamland

Fun waves at Dreamland this morning! With a new moon and a new swell, our beginner and intermediate surfers set off for Dreamland at first light. On the outside, the intermediate surfers enjoyed shoulder-high peeling right and left-breaking waves. On the inside, the beginner surfers rode the easy, left-breaking waist-high waves, breaking slower and softer than the waves on the outside. The conditions were very clean with no wind and a very low tide. Today’s session was very relaxed and inviting, with mellow vibes in the lineup to match the mellow waves.

At the end of the day, surfing is about having fun and enjoying your session. We are always striving to improve our surfing, and some find that the biggest improvements come when you are the most relaxed.

Intermediate surf guiding at Geger Left

The Uluwatu area awoke to find a west wind blowing into the waves. This does not present a problem for us as it is always offshore somewhere in Bali. Our advanced surfers set off for Geger Left in Nusa Dua, where they found overhead offshore peaks breaking both left and right. The surfers challenged themselves with steep takeoffs and fast walls, which highlight the inefficiencies you may have when popping up and driving down the line.

In these conditions, with some guidance, you can learn techniques to get you up and riding quicker, such as optimising your positioning to give you the most time to get to your feet, angling your takeoff, and making sure your feet are in the correct position to leverage your surfboard to drive you forward.

Intermediate surf guiding at Pandawa

A bigger swell is making its way to our shoreline and we are beginning to see the larger-sized waves. Our advanced surfers chose to step away from the usual spots and paddle out at Pandawa despite the rising swell and a bit of breeze. As you can see from the photos, their decision paid off as they found powerful and fun left and right peaks with clean faces. The waves were mostly in the overhead range, with a few larger sets. The surfers enjoyed the exhilarating morning and were stoked to find such good waves with a light crowd.

Pandawa is a wave where you can really feal the power of the ocean- whether on top of a wave or being pummeled by one. A lot more swell on the way!
