Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

After a few days of wild weather and the complete silence of Nyepi, we are back at it with good conditions and sunshine! Our surfers were keen to get out there this morning as the conditions had cleaned up beautifully and the wind had turned offshore! There were plenty of waves thanks to a combination of swells in the water. The surf was in the head-high + range with a few larger set waves. The waves were breaking nice and slow- at the perfect pace for our beginner surfers to find their balance.

During Nyepi, we went over core techniques at the surf camp such as paddling, the pop-up, and the functional stance for developing surfers, so our beginners were prepared for the day ahead.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

Fun beginner surfing conditions this morning at the beautiful Padang Padang Beach! The surf has picked up in size since yesterday, with the waves breaking up to shoulder-high in height. The wind from the west is blowing stronger today than yesterday, however the conditions were still clean. The tide was moving quickly today, which exposed the fresh surfers to the ever-changing nature of the ocean. The surfers all had a great time.

The surfers worked on getting into the functional stance from the pop-up, which is an essential step towards progressing beyond a beginner level. Once you have developed the ability to ride from the top of the wave in the functional stance, a new level of control and speed becomes available to you.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Medewi

There were fun waves at the cruisey left-hand pointbreak at Medewi this morning. This wave is a few hours’ drive along the coast from Padang Padang, and it offers long and slow lefts over a rocky bottom. The surf was breaking in the shoulder-high range with no wind. The waves were breaking about half-way down the point however the conditions were smooth and the session was relaxed.

Medewi is an excellent intermediate surfers’ wave as it breaks in a long and slow manner that helps a surfer identify when they need to return to the power source (the pocket) of the wave. Too slow to return to the power source and you will be off the back of the wave.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

Wonderful beginner surf conditions this morning! We have an overcast day today with mixed weather conditions, which is great news for those who know where and when to surf. Our beginner surfers enjoyed an easy, relaxed day in the line-up, with a light crowd and fun conditions. The surface of the ocean was very smooth and calm, with just a touch of wind from the west. The waves were breaking at about waist-high, which is a good size for just learning to stand up.

These are great conditions for learning to surf. The waves were coming in at a slow pace, and all broke in a consistent manner. Slow and consistent surf is the perfect platform to improve your surfing.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Balangan

Small wave surfing today in Bali. Our beginner surfers chose to surf at Balangan in easy, beginner-friendly conditions. The weather was excellent, and the crowds were light. The waves were in the shoulder-high range and were breaking nicely left across the reef. The wind was blowing slightly onshore from the southwest, but the waves were still fun. The surfers worked on getting to their feet quickly with their feet placed correctly over the centre line of the surfboard.

This time of year, you can often get uncrowded surf at waves around the surf camp. Most people head straight to Nusa Dua or other parts of the island without realizing there are fun waves just on our doorstep. See you out there!

Beginner Surf Lessons at Dreamland

More fun beginner surfing at Dreamland this morning! The conditions were very clean and the waves were breaking at an easy pace- perfect for beginner surf lessons! The wind was blowing nicely light offshore against the shoulder-high waves. The surface of the ocean was very smooth, and the water was that dreamy turquoise colour that Dreamland is famous for. Overall, it was a great session!

For beginner surfers, Dreamland is a step up in difficulty as there is no channel, and the waves break a little faster. These waves give the surfer the opportunity to ride left and right down the line a greater distance than at Padang Padang. When learning to ride the waves at Dreamland, a surfer will learn to engage their rail and get moving down the line.

Intermediate surf guiding at mengiat

Fun waves at Mengiat this morning! There was plenty of wind, but the surf was pumping with a light crowd! The stiff offshore breeze allowed fun left and right peaks to form. The lefts offered a particularly fun, wedgy shape, which allowed for plenty of speed for the surfers to do their best turns. The waves were in the shoulder-high range, with a few larger waves. Most of the crowd chose to surf at Chicken Wings on the other side of the deep channel, which made the lefts and rights at Mengiat that much more appealing.

Mengiat is a less-often surfed A-frame peak breaking left and right. The wave is “peaky and bowly” due to the shallow water on the reef and deep water just beyond the reef.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Black Stone

Small and windy surf this morning but plenty of fun waves to be had! Our beginner group surfed at Blackstone at first light, where they enjoyed up-to shoulder-high waves with an offshore wind. The tide was just high enough for the waves to break in both directions. The offshore wind helps keep the waves up for a longer period of time before breaking. This extendes the length of the rides and gives the developing surfers more time to ride down the line.

The beach scene at Blackstone is very different than the more local scene at Padang Padang. The sounding area is groomed and cleaned (including the sand), and the shoreline is full of high-end resorts. It is a very pretty location and a fun place to surf.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

The protected cove at Padang Padang offered ideal beginner surf conditions for our group of budding surfers this morning. The wave is just tucked in enough to be protected from the southwest wind, and yet it still picks up the smaller swells. Our surfers enjoyed waist-high waves, moving along at the perfect pace for finding your balance on the waves. There was a little wind farther offshore; however, the conditions were clean, with a calm sea state and smooth wave faces. The surfers enjoyed the lighter crowd- a big benefit to coming to Bali during the quiet season.

The surfers all relished the long rides and easy-breaking nature of the wave. The wave itself breaks with a remarkable consistency, which is a key factor in developing your surfing ability.
