Intermediate surf guiding at Dreamland

Our intermediate surfers rose early to catch the sunrise and some waves at the surf camp’s Favorite low-tide A-Frame at Dreamland. The sets were slow coming as we waited for the new swell to fill in. Despite the wait, the surfers all managed to get a few shoulder-high waves, with the most patient of surfers being rewarded with overhead, long rides. The trade wind was making itself known early, which is expected given we are in the windiest month of the year. Overall it was a cruisy morning with friendly waves in a stunningly beautiful location.

A big swell will be filling in through the day today. Tomorrow will see double-overhead high waves, and we may get to watch brave surfers compete for the best barrel ride at the Rip Curl Cup in Padang Padang. See you out there!

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Beautiful lined-up surf this morning at Bali’s premier surf destination! The swell has continued to taper off in size, with wave heights dropping to head-high on the largest of sets, with many shoulder-high sets in between. At first light, the wind was dead calm, the water was sheet glass, and the surf was coming through in clean lines. Our intermediate surfers revelled in the opportunity to surf Uluwatu on a small day in such beautiful conditions. The Tradewind did begin to kick in at around 7:00 am after our surfers had many waves.

Uluwatu is known for powerful barreling surf for advanced surfers only, but it is actually a great location for intermediate surf lessons on between-swell days. The location is exceptionally beautiful, set beneath the towering cliffs.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Our intermediate surfers had a fun morning surfing Balangan after leaving camp before dawn. The surf had dropped in size considerably since yesterday, with shoulder-high sets coming through the reef. The lineup was beautifully calm as the sun rose, however, the Tradewind wind picked up mid-session. The Tradewind blows offshore at Balangan, but its presence means surfers must paddle hard to get into waves. The tide was perfect this morning for the lines to run quickly along the reef in that tapered shape that Balangan is known for.

The surfers worked on building and maintaining speed down the line, which is done through a flowing body movement and correct weight distribution.

Intermediate surf guiding at Dreamland

Fun waves at Dreamland this morning! The surfers paddled out into what appeared to be small conditions; however, once the tide turned, head-high sets appeared with a few larger set waves coming in. The wind was not as strong as yesterday, but it was blowing steady offshore at first light. The 7:00 am low tide dropped to .2 meters this morning, which is a great tide for Dreamland. Our advanced group enjoyed the long lefts and the slower rights, and welcomed the drop in wave heights. The surfers worked on staying in the power source of the wave, which allows you to execute manoeuvres with more speed.

The swell will continue to drop through Monday before a new swell will begin to fill in on Tuesday and Wednesday. See you out there!

Intermediate surf guiding at Dreamland

Pumping surf this morning as the new swell began to arrive earlier than expected. Some big sets were breaking at Uluwatu, while impossibles was pushing double-overhead high. With a .3 meter low tide and a pumping swell at first light, our surfers choose to paddle out to the A-frame peak at Dreamland. The set waves were pushing double-overhead with a light offshore breeze and smooth conditions. The A-frame was producing beautiful, smooth rights with faster lefts.

Dreamland is a great wave to increase your level of comfort when the swell picks up. The take-offs are easy, and you are rewarded with long rides. Additionally, if you are not near the impact zone at the peak, the waves break softer in deeper water, which reduces the consequences of getting caught inside.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Our intermediate surfers rose before sunrise this morning to catch the high tide at Balangan at first light. They were rewarded with really fun shoulder-to-head high left-handers breaking at the right pace for a fun session, complimented by a light offshore wind. The swell has continued to drop off in size since yesterday, leaving us with a great wave size for intermediate surfing. Tomorrow, we expect smaller conditions, which means more fun surfing, especially for beginners and intermediates.

We love surfing first thing in the morning, and for most of our guests, it is a highlight of their trip. The crowds are lighter, the sun is less strong, and the wind is usually lighter. As a bonus, you are home in time for breakfast after surfing. See you out there!

Intermediate surf guiding at Honeymoon

With a lively Indian Ocean and a low tide, our intermediate surfers set off for the tucked away left at Honeymoon. This wave is an excellent option when the swell grows to plus-sized. After winding their way through the forest to the surf break, the surfers found long-running left waves breaking off the cliff. The waves were in the head-high range, with occasional larger sets for the patient surfers sitting furthest outside. The wind blew very lightly offshore, and the faces of the waves were smooth and clean. The surfers worked on improving the speed of their pop-ups, which is required to make the sometimes tricky take-off.

The swell will continue to drop as the day progresses. However, waves will continue to be in the overhead range tomorrow and the next day.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Today at the surf camp’s preferred high tide break, we enjoyed more exciting waves. Following breakfast, our intermediate surfers made their way to Balangan, allowing ample time for the tide to rise and create those renowned fun walls. While the swell has decreased in size and consistency compared to yesterday, we still had enjoyable shoulder to head-high running waves to ride. The wind was stronger than normal this morning, however, given the offshore direction, the surfing conditions remained good. The intermediate surfers honed their skills in weight distribution while surfing with stronger winds.

It’s important to note that we are experiencing larger tide fluctuations currently, influenced by the new moon phase of the lunar cycle. The large swing in the tide will continue for the next few days.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Our group of intermediate surfers had a great morning at Balangan! The large swell has dropped to a more manageable size, allowing our surfers to spread out around the area. At Balangan, the surfers enjoyed head-high waves with the occasional larger set waves. The seasonal offshore breeze was stiff, which kept the lines open for long rides down the reef. The surfers worked on developing their ability to read a wave, including identifying when to speed up versus when to do a turn. Once this skill is learned, a surfer will enjoy the ability to maximize the ride time on every wave.

The characteristics of the dry season are in full effect, bringing larger swells with periods of increased offshore wind. This of course, means you can surf all day!
