Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

This morning we took the early boat to Toro Toro, hoping to get in a session before the new swell arrived. It was a building swell this morning, and although not much bigger than yesterday, it was much more powerful. The first day of a new swell is usually the most powerful as the higher period faster waves arrive first. We decided to go take a look at what was going down at Uluwatu. A few hell men on big boards riding big boards. 2019 world champion Italo Ferriera was out there on a shortboard, ripping it up. A bit of wind on it made for challenging conditions, but good to watch with a cold Bintang.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

The beginner and intermediate group took the fun boat to Toro Toro and were rewarded with perfect conditions and perfect waves. The advanced group wanted a bit more power, and they found what they were looking for at Uluwatu. A 16 second swell period means the waves were breaking hard and throwing some barrels. A lot of west in the swell meant that some of the waves were running a bit fast, but if you got the right one then it was a very long paddle back. The current at Uluwatu brings you back to the line up, so a slow paddle back after a very long ride can be the most economical way back to the line up.

Intermediate surf guiding at Padang Padang

What a fun morning today! Happy faces, sunny weather, and great waves, this is a recipe Bali is famous for. The mellow waves allow beginner and intermediate surfers to improve their skills on a daily basis.

Even though it was busy today in the line-up, with the help of professional guides, it is easy and safe to catch waves. Sharing is caring and sometimes patience is key to getting a good wave and maybe even the wave of the day. You never know. That is one of many reasons why surfing is so much fun. You might get surprised more often than you think.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

We went for a 6am surf at Uluwatu this morning, to get a few rides, before they closed the spot for the local Uluwatu board riders competition. It was low tide this morning which is not usually the best tide, but fortunately it was a small low tide, and the conditions were very good. Smaller than yesterday but not many out and some clean waves to be had. They started the competition around 8am and some of the photos are of the local rippers. Always very good atmosphere when there is a competition, as the locals are excited to do well.

Intermediate surf guiding at Toro Toro

Toro-Toro was an absolute blast this morning! Great waves and great company in the water made everybody happy. When the swell is too big for most of the surf spots in the Bukit, Toro-Toro offers a suitable training ground for intermediate surfers.

The waves are fun, but still challenging enough to push yourself to the next level. The clean right-handers are perfect to practice turns and generating speed. The big channel makes it easy to paddle back to the line-up after a long ride. What makes it even more fun is that you need a boat to get out and back to the beach. This is something you won’t do every day and therefore is a wonderful experience to have.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

The swell is smaller today – perfect size at Balangan for Intermediates. Light offshore winds and plenty of sunshine. Very big spring tides now in Bali, and Balangan is one of the better spots for holding a high tide. As always at Balangan, wave selection is key. The best ones don’t have a very long line that will run too fast. Mostly head high fun sized waves perfect for racing sections and making turns. Tomorrow the swell is forecast to be a little bit bigger with a massive 2.9 metre tide.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

Surfing is a wonderful experience! Being outdoors in the ocean, surrounded by nature is absolutely one of the best moments you can have. When catching a wave and going down the face of the wave for the first time, it feels even better.

Of course, it takes time and practice to be able to catch your own waves and to actually surf right or left on the wave. But once you do, from this point on, the experience will just get better and better. Every session you have will take you closer to the next level. In surfing, you always keep learning, it is one of the few sports that push you to keep going and to improve. This is what makes it so exciting and fun to do on a daily basis!
