Advanced surf guiding at Impossible

The swell was quite small at 6am and it looked like Uluwatu would be the go, but as the tide came in the new swell arrived and there were some solid sets coming through. We decided on Impossibles for a change and was very good at start of the session. Around 9am the wind came on strong, and many of the waves were too fast. There was some bombs that were not too fast. The trick as Impossibles is to pick the wave with a short line as these break the slowest. Long line waves are too fast.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

When conditions are right, Uluwatu is one of the best world class waves in the area. Today the spot provided perfect conditions for intermediate looking to improve. Its a great improvement spot for learning carving, pop up quickly and pumping. The waves there are longer and clean. The wind in this season is offshore everyday, so we can enjoy surfing all day.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

The swell is smaller today but still some occasional big sets coming through. An unusual weather pattern means the wind is more southerly than normal and Uluwatu was again cross offshore, with some bump on the face of the wave. Not many out today and some bomb waves to be had, with the occasional barrel section.

Advanced surf guiding at Bingin

Uluwatu was again very exposed to the wind again today, but much cleaner on the stretch of coastline from Padang2 to Dreamland. Bingin was perfect size today, and very clean conditions. There was around a dozen people out at the beginning of the session, and quite a strong current, but when the tide dropped and the current eased off, there was hardly anyone. We were very lucky to get a golden hour at Bingin with perfect tide and just 5 or 6 people in the water with enough waves in the set for everyone. We had a rain shower but it didn’t last long before the sun returned.

Advanced surf guiding at Bingin

We were up very early to dawn patrol Uluwatu this morning. Swell had picked up, and no one on the race track, but there was a bit of a bump on the wave from a cross shore wind. After breakfast we decided to go to Bingin as the swell was picking up, and Bingin is more sheltered from the wind. As the tide dropped, the waves got bigger and better, with some barrels to be had. The swell is forecast to be quite big this weekend, which gives plenty of surf spots to choose from.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

The swell was smaller than expected this morning, and while Bingin was very clean, it was not big enough, so we decided on Uluwatu. Wave quality was unusually poor this morning at Uluwatu. Empty line up was helpful and there were a few good ones to be had. Late morning, the wind picked up side shore and we decided to head back for breakfast.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

Bingin and Impossibles were both good size for intermediates today, and very clean. It was a toss up between Impossibles and Uluwatu and we decided on the latter, as Impossibles was sectioning. Only about 6 people out on the Racetrack this morning, and quite challenging conditions, as a lot of water running down from the peak into the take off zone. As always at Uluwatu, it is about skill, luck and wave selection, and there were a few bombs to be had if you made the drop and first section.
