Airport rights is a top-quality performance wave that breaks top to bottom and is very fast and long. The end section can be deadly, so ensure there is either enough water or you have enough skill to survive. Due to the bathymetry of the reef, the end section bowls something like you see in the Mentawais or Fiji. This is caused by the breaking part of the wave slowing down in shallow water while the shoulder is in deeper water and moving much faster. It takes nerve to pull in here; not recommended for goofy footers or intermediate surfers. If it all goes horribly wrong, we can recommend the SOS clinic to get stitched up, which is located not far from where the boats launch in Jimbaran.
This is Kelly Slater’s favourite wave for a reason. On bigger days, it is for advanced/expert surfers only, but on smaller days, with enough water on the reef, it can be fun for intermediates. There are several left and rights just a short distance away for all skill levels.
