Bingin is a perfect mechanical left-hander that proves God is a goofy footer. The most perfect wave in Bali, it is rather short but very intense, ideal for advanced surfers. Take off, stall, barrel, top turn, kick out. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Very powerful and fast even when shoulder high. Given this wave’s mechanical perfection, this is the perfect wave to learn to ride the barrel. What’s not to like about Bingin apart from the short ride? It’s always crowded, and the locals have got it dialled. Most of the local boys only surf Bingin as it’s so good they don’t want to bother with the 5-minute ride up to Ulu’s or any of the other excellent spots on the Bukit. Be respectful and patient, and you will eventually get a turn. Small inside waves are amazing fun but watch out for clean-up sets and be careful not to get run over by the tube riders who don’t have any room for manoeuvre. Go too deep, and you will pay the price as the reef is directly in front of the take-off spot. Ride too far, and you will end up in Greedies. Yes, Greedies looks oh so tempting, but the price you pay can be awful as it breaks in 2 inches of water. All the visiting pro surfers like to visit Bingin when it’s on, and they will attempt a floater one time only. Best done not at all or in a full suit with a helmet and booties.
Mini pipeline works on a high tide and bigger swell. The groms love it, but you need to be quick to your feet and know what you are doing to avoid the army of crabs waiting for the next piece of white flesh to dine on.
