Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

This morning we took the early boat to Toro Toro, hoping to get in a session before the new swell arrived. It was a building swell this morning, and although not much bigger than yesterday, it was much more powerful. The first day of a new swell is usually the most powerful as the higher period faster waves arrive first. We decided to go take a look at what was going down at Uluwatu. A few hell men on big boards riding big boards. 2019 world champion Italo Ferriera was out there on a shortboard, ripping it up. A bit of wind on it made for challenging conditions, but good to watch with a cold Bintang.

The beginner and intermediate group took the fun boat to Toro Toro and were rewarded with perfect conditions and perfect waves. The advanced group wanted a bit more power, and they found what they were looking for at Uluwatu. A 16 second swell period means the waves were breaking hard and throwing some barrels. A lot of west in the swell meant that some of the waves were running a bit fast, but if you got the right one then it was a very long paddle back. The current at Uluwatu brings you back to the line up, so a slow paddle back after a very long ride can be the most economical way back to the line up.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

We went for a 6am surf at Uluwatu this morning, to get a few rides, before they closed the spot for the local Uluwatu board riders competition. It was low tide this morning which is not usually the best tide, but fortunately it was a small low tide, and the conditions were very good. Smaller than yesterday but not many out and some clean waves to be had. They started the competition around 8am and some of the photos are of the local rippers. Always very good atmosphere when there is a competition, as the locals are excited to do well.

Advanced surf guiding at Uluwatu

So much fun at Uluwatu this morning. We decided on an early start, which coincided with high tide. Fortunately we got small tides at the moment which is perfect for the bukit reefs as the tide moves slowly and does not go too high or too low, all day. Swell size was a little bit smaller than yesterday, and mostly head high, but there were some bomb sets to be had on the racetrack. Waves were cleaner today as there was less current and the wind was a bit lighter. Tomorrow the forecast is for a solid 15 Second period swell and light winds. All the breaks will be pumping tomorrow, so we just need to make sure we pick the best spot at the best time.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Uluwatu was the preferred spot to go today for many surfers on the Bukit. The smaller swell and low to mid-tide in the morning were perfect for the race-track section. Long, clean left-handers were peeling over the reef and there was plenty of time to practice bottom and top turns.

Another reason why Uluwatu is so popular is the scenery and nature that surround this world-class surfing spot. Sitting in the line-up and waiting for the next set to come while looking at the huge cliffs in front of you, is something you don’t experience every day. Add the fact that this is one of the best waves on the planet and you know why a trip to Uluwatu is so special.
